Chapel of Santo António do Alto
Opening hours Açoteia 18:00h to 24:00h
The Chapel of Santo António do Alto, in Faro, is the result of the association of a 15th century chapel with a Gothic-medieval watchtower, built - according to its function as a lookout - at the highest point in the region. The tower was built in 1355, during the reign of King Afonso IV, in order to complete the defensive system of the city, and the temple was placed on its first floor.
The complex contributed to the definition of an important route of the town, the Rua de Santo António do Alto, which, starting from the riverside area, separated the Mouraria and Judiaria districts of Faro, followed the site of the old Alcaçarias and ended at this hill, then located at some distance from the urban center.
From the tower you can see a fantastic landscape from the barrocal to the sea and from Olhão to Quarteira!
